This biography therefore attempts to describe his experiences, opinions, and character, in such a way that the eventual appearance and content of On War may perhaps be better explained and understood. Parkinson has sought to offer as complete an account as possible of Clausewitz's writing, military career, and even his domestic life - although a major difficulty with the latter is the dearth of source material.
