905 Lost King of France: How DNA Solved the Mystery of the Murdered Son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette Deborah Cadbury
St. Martin 2003-10-23 0312320299 Paperback Used: Like New Paperback
Remainder Mark -- In 1793, when Marie Antoinette was beheaded at the guillotine, she left her adored eight-year-old son imprisoned in the Temple Tower. Far from inheriting a throne, the orphaned boy-king had to endure the hostility and abuse of a nation. Two years later, the revolutionary leaders declared Louis XVII dead. No grave was dug, no monument built to mark his passing. Immediately, rumors spread that the prince had, in fact, escaped from prison and was still alive. Others believed that he had been murdered, his heart cut out and preserved as a relic. As with the tragedies of England's princes in the Tower and the Romanov archduchess Anastasia, countless "brothers" soon approached Louis-Charles's older sister, Marie-Therese, who survived the revolution. They claimed not only the dauphin's name, but also his inheritance. Several "princes" were plausible, but which, if any, was the real heir to the French throne? The Lost King of France is a moving and dramatic tale that interweaves a pivotal moment in France's history with a compelling detective story that involves pretenders to the crown, royalist plots and palace intrigue, bizarre legal battles, and modern science. The quest for the truth continued into the twenty-first century, when, thanks to DNA testing, the strange odyssey of a stolen heart found within the royal tombs brought an exciting conclusion to the two-hundred-year-old mystery of the lost king of France.

907 Minnesota Shaped by the Land Deborah Gelbach
American Historical Press 2005-10 1892724472 Hardcover New Hardcover
No hyperbole is needed to convey the drama of more than three centuries of Minnesota's growth. 908 Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith Deborah Heiligman
Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) 2009-01-06 0805087214 Hardcover Used: Very Good Hardcover
Remainder Mark. Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, his revolutionary tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859. Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create tension between the scientific and religious communities. Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife, Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark intense debates. Deborah Heiligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory: how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion for young readers. Charles and Emma is a 2009 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

919 Ballad of Blind Tom, Slave Pianist Deirdre O'Connell
Overlook Hardcover 2009-02-05 1590201434 First Edition Hardcover New Hardcover
Born into slavery in Georgia, Tom Wiggins died an international celebrity in New York in 1908. His life was one of the most bizarre and moving episodes in American history. Born blind and autistic-and so unable to work with other slaves-Tom was left to his own devices. He was mesmerized by the music of the family's young daughters, and by the time he was four Tom was playing tunes on the piano. Eventually freed from slavery, Wiggins, or "Blind Tom" as he was called, toured the country and the world playing for celebrities like Mark Twain and the Queen of England and dazzling audiences everywhere. One part genius and one part novelty act, Blind Tom embodied contradictions-a star and a freak, freed from slavery but still the property of his white guardian. His life offers a window into the culture of celebrity and racism at the turn of the twentieth century.

929 The Likeness of Venice: A Life of Doge Francesco Foscari Dennis Romano
Yale University Press 2007-07-13 0300112025 Hardcover New Hardcover
Immortalized in later centuries in works by Lord Byron, Giuseppe Verdi, Eugène Delacroix, and others, Francesco Foscari reigned as the powerful doge of Venice during tumultuous years from 1423 to 1457. The stuff of legends, his life was marked by political conflict, vengeful enemies, family heartbreak, and, at the end, the forced relinquishment of the ducal throne. Yet Foscari left behind no personal papers, and until now, no complete biography of him has been written. This book, a thorough and fascinating biography, fills that longstanding gap, illuminating not only the life of the man but also the history and culture of fifteenth-century Venice. Dennis Romano reconstructs Foscari’s life through careful reading of extant governmental records and chronicle sources. He also uses architectural monuments built by Foscari and his heirs as critical interpretive keys for unlocking the personality and policies of the doge. Romano analyzes how art and power intersected in Renaissance Italy and how the doge came to represent and even embody the state. With this biography, Romano clears away longstanding myths, fills in previously unknown details about Foscari’s triumphs and ordeals, and allows to emerge the first intimate portrait of this singular doge.

930 The House of Tekelden Denys Dawnay
Bloomsbury USA 2005-11-14 1596910488 First Edition Hardcover New Hardcover
With a lineage stretching back as far as the first century AD, few families can lay claim to a history as illustrious and colorful as that of Flower, the tail end of the Tekelden line, for whom Dawnay wrote and illustrated this one-of-a-kind book, in an almost certainly vain hope that the history of his ancestors will teach Flower to improve. Starting with Rattila the Hund and his Sack of Rome in 463, Dawnay follows the lives of Rattilas dachshund descendants, both distinguished and notorious, celebrating their achievements through family portraits by notable artists of the day, from Van Dyck to Picasso. Meet Jan Tekelden, a famous gourmet whose love of garlic and leeks was eulogized by Chaucer, and Odo the Odious, Cardinal Lord Bishop of Bavaria, whose favorite game was to invite rivals to dinner and feed them poisoned pork pies. Celebrated women of the family include Katherine Paw, the acclaimed beauty; la Ratte Ravissante, wife of the rakish Flush Tekelden; and Madame Rattier, who, despite her renowned Parisian salons, was unceremoniously tossed out on her haunches for refusing to ever get off the couch. This full-color facsimile of the original hand-drawn and scripted manuscript has never been available beyond Flowers family and is a wholly unique, tongue-in-jowl addition to the literature on dogs.

933 Bastard Tongues: A Trail-Blazing Linguist Finds Clues to Our Common Humanity in the World's Lowliest Languages Derek Bickerton
Hill and Wang 2008-03-04 0809028174 Hardcover Used: Like New Hardcover
Remainder Mark - Bastard Tongues is an exciting, firsthand story of scientific discovery in an area of research close to the heart of what it means to be human - what language is, how it works, and how it passes from generation to generation, even where historical accidents have made normal transmission almost impossible. The story focuses on languages so low in the pecking order that many people don't regard them as languages at all - Creole languages spoken by descendants of slaves and indentured laborers in plantation colonies all over the world. The story is told by Derek Bickerton, who has spent more than thirty years researching these languages on four continents and developing a controversial theory that explains why they are so similar to one another. A published novelist, Bickerton (once described as "part scholar, part swashbuckling man of action") does not present his findings in the usual dry academic manner. Instead, you become a companion on his journey of discovery. You learn things as he learned them, share his disappointments and triumphs, explore the exotic locales where he worked, and meet the colorful characters he encountered along the way. The result is a unique blend of memoir, travelogue, history, and linguistics primer, appealing to anyone who has ever wondered how languages grow or what it's like to search the world for new knowledge.

These organizations promote conservation of heritage livestock for their unique traits, which may contribute to genetic diversity among animals important to human food supplies and economies, as

937 Out of the Storm: The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther Derek Wilson
St. Martin's Press 2008-01-08 0312375883 First Edition Hardcover New Hardcover
Martin Luther changed Europe and, through Europe, the world. It was he who originally exposed the myth of a unifed Latin Christendom, in fact only held together by crusades, heresy hunts, Inquisition, and priestly magic. Though not the first radical thinker to challenge papal pretensions and the doctrines they were founded on, by his defiance Luther created the biggest cause celebre of the age. But this renegade monk did not just split Europe into rival Protestant and Catholic camps. By urging Christians to read and interpret the Bible for themselves, he gave a religious boost to that emancipation of the individual we associate with the Renaissance. By putting men and women in charge of their own destiny he made a cultural impact that is incalculable.

947 The Physics of NASCAR: How to Make Steel + Gas + Rubber = Speed Diandra Leslie-Pelecky
Dutton Adult 2008-02-14 0525950532 Hardcover Used: Like New Hardcover
Remainder Mark. Every NASCAR fan--at one time or another--asks the same question: Why isn't my favorite driver winning? This is your chance to discover how much more there is to NASCAR than "Go fast, turn left and don't crash." If you've ever wondered why racecars don't have mufflers, how "bump drafting" works, or what in the world "Let's go up a pound on the right rear and add half a round of wedge" means, The Physics of NASCAR is for you. In this fast-paced investigation into the adrenaline-pumping world of NASCAR, a physicist with a passion uncovers what happens when the rubber hits the road and 800- horsepower vehicles compete at 190 miles per hour only inches from one another. Diandra Leslie-Pelecky reveals how and why drivers trust the engineering and science their teams literally build around them not only to get them across the finish line in first place, but also to keep them alive. Professor Leslie-Pelecky is a physicist in love with the sport's beauty and power and is uniquely qualified to explain exactly how physics translates into winning races. Based on the author's extensive access to race shops, pit crews, crew chiefs and mechanics, this book traces the life cycle of a race car from behind the scenes at top race shops to the track. The Physics of NASCAR takes readers right into the ultra competitive world of NASCAR, from the champion driver's hot seat behind the detachable steering wheel to the New Zealander nicknamed Kiwi in charge of shocks for the No. 19 car. Diandra Leslie-Pelecky tells her story in terms anyone who drives a car--and maybe occasionally looks under the hood--can understand. How do drivers walk away from serious crashes? How can two cars travel faster together than either car can on its own? How do you dress for a 1800°F gasoline fire? In simple yet detailed, high-octane prose, this is the ultimate thrill ride for armchair speed demons, auto science buffs, and NASCAR fans at every level of interest.

954 Battleship Arizona's Marines At War: Making the Ultimate Sacrifice, December 7, 1941 Dick Camp
Zenith Press 2006-11-15 0760327173 Paperback New Paperback
On December 7, 1941, about twenty minutes into the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an armor-piercing bomb struck the USS Arizona, penetrating four decks before exploding. An immense fire, fed by ammunition and fuel oil, swept through the ship, instantly killing hundreds of men. The Arizona quickly settled to the bottom of the harbor, taking most of her crew of 1,514 with her. Of the 88 Marines assigned to the battleship, only 15 survived. This account of the Arizona's Marines on that fateful day, the first to tell their little-known story, also covers the broader history of shipboard Marines as well as the Arizona from her launch in World War I to the dawn of America's entry into World War II. With more than 100 historic photographs, many never before published, the book is a fitting tribute to Marine detachment Arizona and to all of America's ship-borne Marines. Includes 5 appendices: a copy of the original Muster Roll from December 1, 1941; a copy of the posthumously-awarded letter of commendation to the family of 2nd Lt. C.E. Simensen; a copy of the original affidavit and casualty roster from December 7; an unknowingly heartbreaking letter from Capt. F.V. Valkenburgh to his girlfriend confirming their date to see the movies on the quarterdeck of the Arizona on the evening of December 7; and an appendix listing updated profiles of the Marines detailed in the story.

955 The Devil Dogs at Belleau Wood: U.S. Marines in World War I Dick Camp
Zenith Press 2008-04-15 0760331898 Paperback New Paperback
"Retreat, hell. We just got here!"So said Captain Lloyd Williams, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, to a French officer urging retreat from the Germans as they pushed toward Paris during their massive Spring Offensive of 1918. Instead, the U.S. Marines-fresh to the fight in a war nearly four years old-drew a line just south of Belleau Wood and held it, saving Paris and beginning the end of the war. But there was still deadly work ahead. In a battle that lasted most of June 1918, the Marines made six bloody sweeps into the meadows within Belleau Wood. Facing massed German machine guns, the carnage was terrible. The 4th Marine Brigade persevered, however, and the Spring Offensive-which had threatened to overwhelm French and British forces before the Americans even joined the battle-would never regain its momentum. The Devil Dogs at Belleau Wood brings the battle to life with numerous personal accounts, illustrating the tenacity and ferocity that earned the Marines the "devil dog" nickname. The exciting text is complemented by over one hundred photographs, many that are rare and never before published, mined from the resources of the Marine Corps archives by

974 American Skin: A Novel Don De Grazia
Touchstone 2000-04-06 0684862220 Paperback Used: Very Good Paperback
Remainder Mark -- American Skin was first published in the United Kingdom to resounding acclaim after the author used his last seventy-five dollars to make an unsolicited submission to the publisher of the Scottish beats, whose work he admired. It is a timeless story about a young man's coming-of-age as well as a stunning portrait of the class and racial tensions that pervade our society. Alex Verdi is on the lam, fleeing from the police who have arrested his parents on drug charges and want him for questioning. Traveling to Chicago, he joins a multiracial group of anti-Nazi skinheads and embarks on an odyssey that takes him from the city's embattled streets to an Army boot camp to Northwestern's plush campus, and finally lands him amid the horrors of maximum-security prison. In this intense and gripping debut, Don De Grazia confirms his stature as a young writer of uncommon seriousness and consummate artistry.

He is intrigued when they turn out to be fellow dinner guests, and even more so when he sees the woman's face, which has been disfigured by excessive plastic surgery. She is Franca Marinello, La Superliftata, whom he's heard of but never met." "This intelligent, mysterious woman entrances Brunetti. When she visits him later at the Questura and asks a favor, he is troubled. Her request seems to land near his investigation into a suspicious death that looks like murder, and the illegal hauling of garbage. In Italy, the environment has reached a crisis. Incinerators across the south are at full capacity, burning who-knows-what, the polluted waters of Venice's canals sit in the shadow of a major chemical complex, and in Naples, enormous piles of garbage grow in the streets." As Brunetti delves into this shadowy, toxic world, he comes face to face with violence as dangerous as he's ever seen, and corruption that touches on his influential father-in-law, as well as the fascinating Franca Marinello.

Can you stretch to the ceiling? Can you stretch to the floor? You can stretch with a whisper, you can stretch with a roar! Doreen Cronin and Scott Menchin give new meaning to the yoga pose downward facing dog as publishing's most energetic pooch explores the many, many ways a kid can get limber. More than simple toe touching, this pup stretches to ride a breeze, grab a snack from a tree, catch a wave. His bubble gum even gets in on the stretching action. POP! And he reminds us not to forget that we also need to stretch our imaginations (recognize that statue, anyone?). 1000 French and German Dolls, Dishes, and Accessories Doris Anderson Lechler
Antique Publishers 1991-08 0915410702 Paperback Used: Like New Paperback
From the inside:Many books have been written on the subject of dolls. My only attempt here is to show you several examples from two collections and to illustrate that it is time for dolls and dishes to meet. Accessories accentuate a doll's assets, bringing out the individual beauty and positive characteristics of a doll. I have often marveled at the trouble collectors go to to get just the right chatelaine for a doll's waist, and then, when she is perfectly attired, she is placed at a table which is too large or too small for her. There is no aesthetic logic for this setting. Accessories for a doll make a collection work. An attractive situation causes renewed interest for the owner as well as for the company she might allow. In addition to the dolls and toys, I am proud to present an outstanding array of toy R.S. and E.S. porcelain sets in this book. Very few of the toy sets, produced in the Germanic section of Europe known as Prussia until the end of WWI, were marked. The marking of toy ware in general is lacking, so that particular fact is not a surprise to knowledgeable toy china collectors. Very few of the forty or so Prussia examples shown in this book are actually marked, but collectors of Prussia ware will recognize the tell tale characteristics of this outstanding array. All of the set have full descriptions in the text. The dolls, dishes, and accessories shown in this book are a social record as well as a delight for the most sophisticated collector of today. The pictures bring to mind rooms of the past punctuated by magnificent toys enjoyed by privileged children from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Toy cupboards overflowed with china and glass while exquisite porcelain dolls waited at tables set with play food, flatware, vases of flowers, and elegant napery. The nursery, presided over by a nanny, has been recreated in many of our homes proving the keepers of the past are the collectors of today.168 pages
